What is 2toDrive?

If you sign up for 2toDrive, you can take your theory exam at age 16. From the age of 16.5, you start taking practical lessons at the driving school. Once you are 17 years old, you may take the exam. Pass the exam? Then you may hit the road. Until you are 18, this is only allowed together with your coach. Then you may (like everyone else) drive independently. This way, you can gain a lot of experience before going on the road independently. This contributes to the safety of yourself and other road users.

You can choose who your coach will be. Your father or mother, for example. You may also designate several coaches if they meet the conditions. For example, your coach must be 27 years of age or older and have had a B driver’s license for at least five years. If your coach is sitting next to you, he must not have drunk alcohol or been under the influence of drugs or medicines. Once you have chosen a coach, he/she can register on the 2toDrive website and apply for a companion pass.

Have your own car and car insurance?
Have you passed your 2toDrive driving test? Then you can buy a car. Remember that you cannot put a number plate in your name yet, because you are not yet 18 years old. Until then, have the car registered in the name of your regular coach. Getting car insurance is a little more complicated. Many insurers do not want to insure a driver under 18. Some insurers will agree to this if the name of your regular coach is on the policy. You must then transfer the registration to your own name when you turn 18.

What are the experiences of 2toDrive?
Since the start of 2toDrive, there have been positive experiences with the experiment. More and more young drivers are gaining experience, and research shows that they take assisted driving seriously. This was evaluated by the Stichting Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek Verkeersveiligheid (SWOV) after five years of experimentation with 2toDrive. As a result of this study, the government decided to enshrine in law the possibility of starting driving lessons from 16.5 years old.
